Shrine Pass Drive Album
On September 17th, 2017 we drove across Shrine Pass. The drive can be made in a 240 mile loop from Denver by leaving on I70 and going to Vail Pass. From there go south on Shrine Pass Road to Red Cliff. From there we went north on 24 to I70 and on to Vail. This drive should be done the last week of September which is usually peak color.
We then go south on the gravel road to Shrine Pass Trailhead.
Soon we pass some sheep..
The drive to Red Cliff is continuosly downhill.
A sign points to Red Cliff just a couple miles away.
The aspens are not quite full color as we continue our drive.
The valley shrubs have had a frost and are very colorful.
Panoramic looking back to the north.
There are many aspen trees but they are at least a week from peak color.
Panoramic of Red Cliff as we leave town.
The only restaurant in town is Mango's Mountain Grill.
The Vail Rest area is our first stop. It is 8 miles to Red Cliff.
We come to Red Cliff.
We pass a small pond in the creek following the road.
The highway intersects Highway 24 at a very scenic spot. Both sides of the bridge are great! We turn to go north to Minturn and I70.
Soon we pass an abandoned mine with it's miners homes.
Passing by a very scenic valley with a train trestle and covered with aspen trees.
The canyon walls get higher and the aspens more numerous as we approach I70.
Soon we are overlooking Vail with the fall colors just starting. The fall colors seem to peak the last week in September in Vail.
