With the leaking of the Pentagon
Papers in June of 1971 President
Nixon believed holdovers from
the Kennedy and Johnson
Administration were trying to
sabatoge his Vietnam policy.
Political Intelligence (spying)
was started as well as a Dirty
Trick Unit created.
The White House taping system
About a third of the Nixon Library is devoted to Watergate.  The
Watergate scandal resulted in President Nixons rersignation on
August 9, 1974.
On August 5, 1974 the tapes
reveal that Nixon ordered the CIA
to obstruct the FBI investigation
on June 23, 1972.  This was
Obstruction of Justice and
impeachable.  He resigned on
August 9, 1974.  He was later
pardoned by President Ford.
The 1st Watergate breakin was
May 27, 1972.  They went back
because the bugs were not
working on June 19, 1972.  The
group was caught.
In 1973 the trials of the
burglars and Senate
Investigations proceed.
In July of 1973 a White House
Assistant reveals the secret
White House taping system.  
On Oct. 12, 1973 the court
orders the tapes be turned
over to the investigators.
Past Presidents that had a White
House taping system.
There was a gap of 18.5
minutes in the tapes.
