The main building of the
multi-building museum.
The rifles of the allies on the left
and the Japanese on the right.
The museum splits into the
European Theater and the Asian
Theater of war.  This is the Asian
section.
New Orleans is home to the National World War II Museum.  It is an amazingly
comprehensive collection of both theaters-European and Asian- that shows
what happens when the world allows dictators to rule unimpeded.  The
introduction video tells that there were 60 million people killed in World War II.
The Military Commanders in the European Theater.
The museum included personal
stories of hero's.  This is Joe
Foss from Sioux Falls, SD.
The European Theater of war with
rifles of the allies on the left and
the Germans and Italians on the
right.
The European Theater section
starts with the unrest leading up to
Hitler running Germany.
The exhibits had videos all along
the way showing actual footage
of battles.  This was of D-day.
This is showing the huge battles liberating France and
continuing toward Germany.
Germany's last gasp was the
Battle of the Bulge and it was
during winter.
There are many buildings and
this is the connection to the Air
War section.
Above a B-17 bomber.  To the
right are some of the planes
used to win the war.
You can walk above the planes
as well as below them.
The USS Tang Submarine was an
escort for Merchant ships.  They
had 9 torpedoes and sank 8
German ships before being sank.
This is a simulation of being in that
submarine during the battle.
We go on the final submarine
mission of the USS Tang.
Left Joanne is given the job of
steering, above as the torpedoes
hit their mark Joanne watches
through a periscope.
In another torpedo room the
ceiling showed movies of the
surface.
