| Hill of Crosses Album |
| Throughout the history of Lithuania there has been many periods of occupation by foreign governments with many people "disappearing". Starting in 1831 this location has been a memorial to those who disappear. The people place a cross as a memorial to those that have been taken by the occupying authorities. During the Soviet occupation from 1940 to 1990 the number of memorial crosses went from a few hundred to hundreds of thousands of crosses. |
