Vietnam has 91 million people in an area that is 1.3 times larger than Colorado. The country has a communist government
with a capitalist economy. In 1973 when the communist came to power they instituted a communist economy with
communes and total control. They survived on communist aid from Cuba and the Soviet Union until 1991. The aid was
cut off and the result was that people had very little food. The government then instituted a capitalist economy which
allowed the farmers to keep their profits and hold their land rent free for 30 years. By 2000 they were exporting rice. The
government also allowed private ownership of land. Foreign companies are allowed to rent land but not own. They have
built factories, developed the tourists industry and developed the infrastructure. The result is a thriving economy.
Vietnam has no government provided welfare system, medical or retirement Social Security. The income tax is 10% of
earnings over $500 a month. The cars are taxed at 200% and the motorbikes are taxed at 150%. One commendable action
that should be noted is that in late 1978 Vietnam attacked the Pol Pot regime in Cambodia. They forced this brutal dictator
who killed millions out of power while the world stood by and watched.
