Petra Jordan Album
Jordan has a population of 10 million located in an area a third the size of
Colorado.  This Jordan visit was to Petra, the ancient city located in a
canyon.  It is over a mile walk from the entrance to the Treasury.  Petra is at
elevation 2,657' and consequently the temperature was only in the 50's.
The cruise port in Aqaba Jordan is
at 29 degrees N latitude or 2000
miles north of the equator.  At port
it was in the 60s on 4/01/2019.

The drive of 60 miles to Petra
was through all desert.  This

City on the way to Petra.  The
haze is sand dust.
At port there were many blades
for wind towers.  Jordan has
many wind towers for electricity.

Gateway to Petra
The start of the "Siq" which is the
narrow passage leading to Petra.
The "Siq" is a narrow
slot canyon that is 3/4
miles long.
Notice the two sculptured
elephants on the left that
erosion has nearly obliterated.
At first there is a horse and
camel path on the left and on
the right a pedestrian path.
The passage gets as
narrow as 10 feet.
The canyon was
patrolled by police.
The first view of the
"Treasury".
For those not wanting to walk
there is the carriage ride as well
as horse and camel rides.
The Al Khazneh, or in
English The Treasury.
They developed an
extensive water system.
The canyon to the right had
many ancient living quarters
built into the rock.
Some chose to go back by
camel.  Do they look scared?
Some could go back by
donkey.  Where are the
customers?
Our turnaround point.  This
area included a cave we
entered to see how they lived.
Inside the cave we learned
about the ancestors style of
living.
Petra Map--Note the history
timeline at the bottom.  It
dates Petra back to 400 BC.
Horses were available to ride or pulling carts.  The cleanup was left
to men with brooms.
There was  a small area in the canyon where tourists could buy
souvenirs.
We stopped for lunch on the way
back to the ship.  It was a hotel
with a fantastic view of the
desert.
