Ming Dynasty in 220 BC to keep
out enemies.  At its peak it took
1 million men to guard it.

The best souvenir from China--a carving of
17 balls in one, each rotates independent of
the others all carved from a solid piece of
bone.  It takes one person a year to make.
China has 1.3 billion people in a area slightly smaller than the US.  It
has had a communist government since 1948.  Reforms have allowed
private ownership of businesses and farms since Chairman Mao died
in 1976.  China had rule by emperors dating back to the Xia Dynysty in
1900 BC.  The last emperor was Puyi, the Xuantong Emperor in 1908.
